Chimney Fires
Prevention
To avoid a chimney fire, have your chimney cleaned at least twice a year.
Detection
The first indication of a chimney fire is usually the noise—a roaring sound that grows louder as the fire's intensity increases. Clouds of black smoke and sparks will be seen exiting the top of the chimney; in severe fires, flames can extend several feet about the chimney.
Actions
Place a spark guard in front of the fire to stop hot soot falling out. Dial 999 or 112 for the Fire Service and keep watching the fire until their arrival. Move all furniture and rugs etc. from the immediate area.
